Farewell To Arms
Based on a novel by Ernest Hemingway about his own real life experiences, Farewell To Arms is a tale of the love between ambulance driver Lt. Henry (Gary Cooper) and Nurse Catherine Barkley (Helen Hayes) during World War I. The action takes place in Italy where the two fall in love and will stop at nothing to be together. Barbara Stanwyck plays fired Journalist Ann Mitchell, who as a parting shot, prints a fake letter from unemployed 'John Doe' threatening suicide in protest of social ills. Ann and her bosses cynically milk the story for all it's worth, until the made-up "John Doe" philosophy starts a whole political movement.
